This is the time of year when local law enforcement agencies ramp up their enforcement of DUI and other traffic laws. In Lexington, the "official" Highway Patrol kickoff for the holiday season was held on December 13th. This was the start of the "sober or slammer" blitz to be carried through the new year.
In addition to increased Highway Patrol activity, the Lexington County Sheriff's Department is also increasing traffic enforcement. Recently the Sheriff's Department setup several checkpoints around Lexington. In the past week there have been multiple arrests and tickets issued for offenses to include DUI, child endangerment, open container, and drug possession.
Lexington isn't the only community affected by this increased law enforcement activity. Checkpoints have been conducted by the City of Columbia, and the Highway Patrol in Richland County as well.
One of the things we have learned is that frequently police officers may cut corners when making DUI arrests during these advertising blitz campaigns. This can lead to situations where people who are innocent of DUI may be arrested or in other situations that can result in dismissals or reductions of charges. We don't believe that any motorists' rights should be limited just because they happened to run into law enforcement during the holiday season, or during any other period of advertised increased enforcement.
